IOCL to Build Compressed Biogas Plant in Chandigarh under SATAT Scheme

 IOCL biogas plant

Chandigarh, August 2025
 – Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has announced plans to set up the city’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant under the Government of India’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme. This initiative highlights IOCL’s strong commitment to clean energy and sustainable waste management.

The proposed IOCL biogas plant will be located on a 10-acre site at the Daddumajra garbage dumping ground. The Municipal Corporation will provide 200 tonnes per day (TPD) of segregated organic solid waste along with 30 TPD of cow dung to power the facility. IOCL will manage the design, financing, construction, and long-term operation of the project.

In addition to clean energy generation, the project includes the development of a green buffer zone around the plant. With a concession period of 15 years, extendable by mutual agreement, the initiative aims to create a sustainable model of converting waste into fuel. If waste availability allows, IOCL may expand the plant’s capacity in the future.

This IOCL biogas plant project not only supports India’s broader energy diversification goals but also addresses urban waste challenges. Once operational, it will contribute to cleaner transportation fuels, reduced emissions, and a healthier environment for Chandigarh’s residents.
